| Firefighter Chris Smith with Elizabeth Ruiz & Jessie Gonzales |
| On May 26th around 9 pm Elizabeth Ruiz lost control of her car on Old Bonner Road, hit a tree and rolled over. When Firefighter Chris Smith arrived on the scene the car was on fire. EMS was not sure if anyone was in the vehicle so Chris used his flashlight to look inside the smoke filled car. He found Elizabeth hanging upside down and unconscious. Chris crawled through the back window, cut the seatbelt and dragged Elizabeth out of the vehicle. On Tuesday July 13th Elizabeth, accompanied by her boyfriend Jessie Gonzales and several other Firefighters, was on hand at the Hudson City Council meeting to show appreciation. "He's a Hero," Elizabeth said. "I don't think i have enough words to thank him." Chris doesn't consider himself a hero. "There's no doubt in my mind that any of these other Firefighters would have done the same thing if they were the first one on the scene." The City of Hudson presented Chris with a plaque depicting a Firefighter running into a burning building with an inscription reading "The Bravest" underneath it. The plaque also reads "Going Beyond The Call Of Duty" and "Risked a Lot to Save a Lot" Chris was the first recipient of this award which was started by the City this year. This is the highest award presented by the City. |
